Guide to Tulbagh

DE OUDE HERBERG
The cosy country restaurant and guesthouse is located in one of the long row of Cape Dutch national monuments built in the Tulbagh style. Enjoy real home cooking in a sun-drenched courtyard. The key is simplicity - with mussel soup, beef and bobotie, and home-made chicken pies, apple pies and cheesecake. Slow lamb for a long, slow lunch on weekends.

PADDAGANG WINE HOUSE
Mind the frogs on the long driveway to the courtyard complex. You won't find frog's legs on the menu at this popular restaurant and cellar. You will find Cape perennials like waterblommetjiebredie, bobotie, smoersnoek and real home-made fare served under the trees or in the quaint dining rooms of this 1821 homestead.

BALLOTINA
Behind the Cape Dutch facade, chef-patron Michael Kenny raises the thatch with fresh olive bread, home-made Italian meatballs and local fruits baked in mascarpone. Here is a menu with robust Med flavours: caprese with a twist, a vegetarian pasta arrabiata with lashings of garlic, pesto, chilli and tomato. Enjoy a post-prandial digestif on the patio at this popular spot.
